When Instability Changes Strategy, Not Effort with Ané Lloyd

In this episode, we're unpacking a recent study by Ramos et al. (2025) exploring how progressively unstable surfaces influence postural control and muscle activation in dogs. While the findings confirm that instability increases spinal movement, what's more interesting is how muscle activation changes - not simply increases. Instead, we see a redistribution of effort, with greater abdominal activation and reduced contribution from some larger, more superficial muscles. Clinically, this raises important questions. These exercises were all static, meaning they primarily challenge stabilisers - not the muscles responsible for movement. So how often are we matching our exercise selection to the actual function of the muscles we want to target? And how can we better integrate instability with dynamic tasks to make our rehab more functionally relevant? Musculoskeletal Adverse Events Associated with Librela with Andrew Armitage

Dr Andrew Armitage from Greenside Referrals in the UK joined Ané for a Facebook Live where they discussed the adverse events associated with the use of Librela. In the live session, Andy shared a short presentation that includes radiographs and descriptions of the bony changes he sees in some of the dogs that experience adverse events from the use of Librela. He explains that we typically see one of two patterns - rapidly progressive joint destruction, which can occur within 2 treatments; and insidious periarticular mineralisation syndrome, which typically develops over a longer period of use. This has a few different presentations, with the strangest being popcorn mineralisation and stegosaurus exostosis... The full recording with the presentation is available in the Onlinepethealth members' libraries or on our YouTube Channel. For the podcast, we have removed the presentation and are instead sharing the discussion, questions, and conversation with Andy and the community. Prophylactic Percutaneous Laser Disc Ablation (PLDA) in IVDD at Risk Dogs with Megan Doyle

In this week's episode, we revisit a Journal Club presented by Ané Lloyd and Megan Doyle from SAAPRA. Together, they explore two key studies on prophylactic percutaneous laser disc ablation (PLDA), discussing what the procedure involves, when it may be indicated, and the outcomes that can be expected. The conversation covers recurrence rates, potential complications, and how PLDA compares to fenestration and no prophylactic treatment. They also translate the research into practical takeaways for vet rehabbers, including how to support dogs following PLDA and what the procedure may mean for long-term spinal health and rehabilitation.
