Inside AI | The EU AI in Practice | Episode 1: Why regulate AI?

Artificial intelligence is developing at unprecedented speed, creating enormous opportunities alongside new challenges around safety, accountability, transparency, and trust. The EU AI Act represents the world’s first comprehensive legal framework for AI, designed to balance innovation with the protection of fundamental rights. But how does regulation become reality? And what role do standards play in helping organizations develop and deploy trustworthy AI systems? This Inside AI | The EU AI Act in Practice series takes a practical look at the journey from legislation to implementation. Across the episodes, it explores why the AI Act was introduced, how risk-based regulation works, how standards support compliance, and what organizations need to consider as they prepare for the new regulatory landscape. From harmonised European standards and AI assurance to quality management and risk management, the series examines the tools and approaches that will help turn AI regulation into practice. This episode explores the problems the AI Act was designed to address and why it takes a risk-based approach. It also examines the role of fundamental rights, responsibilities across the AI value chain, and why standards will be essential to supporting compliance. Audiobook | Report - Creating a Culture of Trust

BSI Reports and Whitepapers provide expert insights, guidance, and analysis on various topics related to standards, compliance, and best practices. They are designed to inform and educate organizations, industries, and policymakers about emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities in areas where standards play a critical role. This episode is an abridged audio version of the BSI Report - The Value of Creating a Culture of Trust: Exploring the impact of workplace health and wellbeing support on productivity. Across many advanced economies, productivity has stagnated while economic inactivity and workplace absence linked to ill-health have increased. As employers navigate demographic change, evolving ways of working and growing wellbeing challenges, understanding how workplace culture influences productivity has become an increasingly important priority for organizations and policymakers alike. The Creating a Culture of Trust report examines how employee confidence in raising health and wellbeing challenges affects productivity across the UK, US and Germany. Drawing on new research, it introduces the concept of the “confidence productivity premium” and shows how supportive workplace cultures and standards-based approaches can reduce absenteeism, improve retention and unlock measurable economic value for employers and the wider economy. Why I am standards-maker | Rowshi Hussain

Standards affect all of us every day, everywhere. By defining good practice, they help people and organizations do things better. For all sorts of things, from nanotechnology to Net Zero guidance. And these standards are made by standards-makers – tens of thousands of people from around the world - who get together to agree good practice to the way things are made and done. All helping to make life easier, safer, and more enjoyable. In this episode, Matthew speaks with Rowshi Hussain, a geo-environmental engineer at Cundall - a global engineering consultancy that provides sustainable design and engineering services for buildings and infrastructure projects. She is a standards-maker in the field of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and an award-winning one too, having won a Young Professional Impact Award at the BSI Impact Awards 2026 for her work on BS 30417. Rowshi shares her motivations for getting and staying involved in standards, the impact of standards-making on her career, her employer, and her advice to anyone considering getting involved in standards.
