Daniel 7:1-8 - 07/05/2026

I. Introduction: The Shift from History to Vision JT Patton begins by noting a major shift in the Book of Daniel. While Chapters 1–6 were historical narratives (Daniel in the lions' den, the fiery furnace, etc.), Chapter 7 begins the apocalyptic and prophetic section of the book. Context: The vision takes place during the "first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon." This chronologically places the vision before the events of Chapter 5 (the writing on the wall). II. The Setting: The Great Sea (v. 1-3) The Vision: Daniel sees the "four winds of heaven" churning up the "Great Sea." Symbolism: In biblical prophecy, the "sea" often represents the restless, chaotic mass of humanity or the nations of the world. From this chaos, four distinct, terrifying beasts emerge. III. The Four Beasts (v. 4-7) The sermon provides an expository breakdown of the four kingdoms represented by these beasts, paralleling King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of the statue in Daniel Chapter 2: The Lion with Eagle’s Wings (v. 4): Representation: The Babylonian Empire. Note: The plucking of the wings and the beast being made to "stand on two feet like a man" is a direct reference to Nebuchadnezzar's humbling and restoration (Chapter 4). The Bear (v. 5): Representation: The Medo-Persian Empire. Details: Raised up on one side (Persia being stronger than Media) with three ribs in its mouth, representing its major conquests (Babylon, Lydia, and Egypt). The Leopard with Four Wings and Four Heads (v. 6): Representation: The Grecian Empire under Alexander the Great. Details: The wings represent the incredible speed of Alexander's conquests; the four heads represent the division of his empire into four parts after his death. The Terrifying and Strong Beast (v. 7): Representation: The Roman Empire. Details: Described as "dreadful and terrible, exceedingly strong," with large iron teeth. It is distinct from the others and utterly destructive. IV. The Ten Horns and the "Little Horn" (v. 8) The climax of the passage focuses on the ten horns of the fourth beast. The Little Horn: Daniel sees a "little horn" emerge, which uproots three of the first horns. This horn has "eyes like the eyes of a man" and a "mouth speaking pompous words." Application: The pastor explains that this horn represents a future ruler (the Antichrist) characterized by arrogance and opposition to God. V. Theological Conclusion: Who is in Control? The sermon concludes by reminding the congregation that while these beasts (kingdoms) appear terrifying and chaotic, they all "come up out of the sea" under the sovereign gaze of God. The Gospel Connection: Even as earthly kingdoms become more "beastly" and arrogant, the vision in Daniel 7 ultimately points toward the "Ancient of Days" and the "Son of Man" (to be covered in the next sermon, Daniel 7:9-14), who will establish an everlasting kingdom that will never be destroyed.
