Ofcom is the UK’s communications regulator, overseeing telecoms, post, broadcast TV and radio, and online services. Ofcom is independent from the UK Government. Under the Online Safety Act, Ofcom’s job is to make online services safer for people in the UK, especially children. Services are required to have effective systems in place to protect all UK users from illegal content and take steps to prevent and protect UK children from encountering pornography and other harmful content. Ofcom’s role involves publicly consulting on guidance to support service’s compliance with the Online Safety Act; supervising services to ensure they understand and comply with their duties; and taking formal enforcement action against suspected breaches of those duties.
